PFD ↔ SIL Band Calculator (IEC 61508 / 61511)

PFD ↔ SIL Band Calculator (IEC 61508 / 61511)

Determine the achieved Safety Integrity Level (SIL 1-4) from a PFDavg value, per IEC 61508-1 Table 2 (Low Demand Mode). Also returns Risk Reduction Factor RRF.

Formula
Low Demand Mode SIL bands (IEC 61508-1 Table 2) :
  SIL 4 : 10⁻⁵ ≤ PFD < 10⁻⁴
  SIL 3 : 10⁻⁴ ≤ PFD < 10⁻³
  SIL 2 : 10⁻³ ≤ PFD < 10⁻²
  SIL 1 : 10⁻² ≤ PFD < 10⁻¹
  RRF   = 1 / PFD

Reference: IEC 61508-1, IEC 61511

The Probability of Failure on Demand (average) — PFDavg is the standard measure of dependability for safety-related systems operating in Low Demand Mode (less than once per year demand rate), as defined in IEC 61508-1.

This calculator returns the achieved SIL band and the equivalent Risk Reduction Factor (RRF = 1/PFD), which is often easier to interpret for non-FS specialists (e.g., RRF = 100 means the safety function reduces the risk by a factor of 100).
