Hydropower
The oldest source of renewable electricity, and still the largest in the world. Mature and dispatchable, it provides the inertia, frequency control and fast start the grid needs more than ever as variable renewables grow. The engineering centres on dam safety, turbines and control.
The main families
Kaplan, Francis, Pelton
Run-of-river for the base ribbon, reservoir for dispatchable peaking. The turbine is chosen by head: Kaplan for low head, Francis for medium head, Pelton for high head. Flow and head set the power.
Reservoir dams
Gravity, arch and embankment dams hold back vast volumes. Structural safety comes first: instrumented monitoring of displacements, uplift pressures and seepage, spillway sizing. A failure is catastrophic.
Mini & micro hydro
Mini and micro plants for distributed generation, often off-grid or on a local network. Low impact, standardized equipment, simple operation. They exploit small heads and support decentralized electrification.
Key challenges
- Dam safety — instrumented monitoring of displacements, uplift pressures and seepage, periodic inspections and continuous auscultation: a dam failure is catastrophic for populations downstream.
- Frequency regulation & ancillary services — generator inertia, fast start, black-start capability to restart a grid after a collapse: hydro is a pillar of stability.
- Speed governor & I&C — the governor adjusts wicket-gate opening to hold frequency, driven by digital I&C and IEC 61850 substations.
- Environmental constraints — ecological continuity, fish passages, reserved flow and sediment management (flushing, desilting) to preserve watercourses.
