Pulp & Paper
One of the most integrated continuous processes in industry: from wood to reel, through chemical pulping and the paper machine. High intensity in water, steam and energy, heavy DCS automation, and a signature hazard of its own — the recovery boiler explosion.
The main families
Chemical (kraft) & mechanical pulping
Digester, washing, bleaching. Recovery boiler burning black liquor to recover chemicals and energy.
Paper machine
Headbox, dryers, calender, reel. Cross-direction quality control (QCS), edge-to-edge regulation at high speed.
Converting & packaging
Slitting, coating, corrugated board and packaging manufacture. High-speed discrete lines.
Key challenges
- Integrated continuous process — the whole line is coupled (steam, chemistry, energy); a stoppage propagates. DCS control with cross-direction quality control.
- Recovery boiler — the signature hazard: any contact between molten smelt and water can cause an explosion. Dedicated monitoring, strict procedures (BLRBAC guidance).
- Water & energy — very large consumption; energy recovery, effluent treatment, strong environmental pressure.
- Speed & quality — machines above 100 km/h; a defect costs tonnes. Real-time profile measurement and control.
